The Good, the Bad, and the Uncertain: The 89th Legislature’s Actions on Bills Impacting Texas Childr

The League has been active throughout the 89th Texas Legislative Session, researching and analyzing bills that relate to our adopted positions on several issues. Our own Lauren Bick chaired Child Welfare Issues at the state level and connected with legislators to communicate those positions, providing testimony on a number of bills. In this article, she notes that, with the help of hundreds of LWV members’ and supporters’ emails to Senate and House committee members, several bills we believe will benefit children and their families passed. If you were one of the hundreds, in some cases thousands, who responded to the League’s Action Alerts, Thank You!

Several bills, which promised help for vulnerable kids, did not pass. We hope to revisit these in the 90th session in 2027. Bills for which we raised concerns passed to the Governor and one bill with uncertain potential will be on the November ballot as a Constitutional Amendment. All these are explained in the full article.

San Antonio Members Attend Lobby Days

Ten members of the San Antonio League of Women Voters attended Lobby Days in Austin on February 24-25. The two-day event consisted of a training session on Monday afternoon, followed by dinner in the evening. On Tuesday, local groups visited their legislators at the Capitol to inform them of the League’s positions on voting rights and election laws, public education and women’s healthcare. Those attending from San Antonio enthusiastically encourage others to participate in Lobby Days 2027!

LWVUS Launches a New Membership System

You will receive an email from the LWVUS asking you to log in to the portal for the first time. You are not being asked to renew or pay dues, only to log in and complete your member information. In Memoriam: Evelyn Bonavita

All of us at the League of Women Voters of San Antonio are saddened to learn of the recent passing of Evelyn Bonavita, a longtime member of the League. Evelyn served as president of the League of Women Voters of San Antonio. She was also the president of the Texas League. She passed away on November 12 in Austin where she had moved earlier this year.

Parts of 2021 election law tossed

A federal judge has ruled that portions of the 2021 Texas omnibus voting law violate the federal Civil Rights act. The bill’s provisions, which added the voter’s driver’s license or partial Social Security number on the mail ballot application and the ballot envelope, ordered elections officials to reject either one if the number was missing or incorrect.

In Memoriam: Nancy Price
