Voter Registration Certificates are still valid

If you are worried that you are no longer registered to vote because that orange card in your wallet says “valid through 12/31/2021,” you can rest your mind:
- You are still registered, and you can still vote. This is not your voter registration – it is merely a certificate with information about the districts you are in. Everyone’s certificate expires on the last day of every odd year.
- Normally, new certificates are mailed at the beginning of January, but because the redistricting changes require much more work than usual, they are late this year. Mailing has already begun on the new ones, and almost everyone should have them within the next week, according to the Bexar County Elections Department. A spokesperson assures that everyone will have them well before the election.
- You don’t need the certificate to vote. What you do need is a photo Voter ID as prescribed by state law. You can find the list and alternatives if you do not possess one at https://www.votetexas.gov/register-to-vote/need-id.html.
- Because of redistricting, the information on the right side of your orange certificate about what districts you are in for U.S. Representative, Texas House, and such may have changed. If you haven’t gotten your new one, which will be a different color, you can see which districts you are now in at https://www.bexar.org/2231/Who-represents-me-Search.
