DPS Fails to Forward Voter Registration Applications

Published on 9/27/2026
This problem isn't new. LWV Texas joined a legal fight leading to a 2021 settlement that requires the state of Texas to update your voter registration when you check one box while updating your license online. From 2020 through 2024, 6 million Texans registered this way.

Since September 2025, counties and voters have reported delays. Last month, the League and the Texas Civil Rights Project wrote to DPS and the Secretary of State and put them on notice of a potential breach of that settlement. Both agencies denied there was a problem. This week's admission confirms what voters and counties have been reporting for months.

We are calling on the state to take four steps:
- Disclose how many voters were affected.
- Notify each affected voter directly.
- Confirm that every application reaches counties before Oct. 5th.
- Fix the root cause so this doesn't happen again.

The League believes Texans should not have to worry that a government processing mistake could put their participation in jeopardy and is committed to helping voters navigate this issue, supporting our local election offices, and holding the state to its obligations.
