LWSA Annual Meeting – Paving the Way Forward & Taking Action

Yvonne Pelayo, Past President | Published on 6/14/2025

On May 17th, LWVSA members came together for our annual meeting to conduct important League business, such as: adopting the budget, approving program priorities and bylaws updates, plus approving the 2025-2026 slate of board members and officers. The approval of board members and officers ushered in a transition of the board’s leadership.  Jill Torbert, who has served on LWVSA’s board since 2020, working in various program areas and leading board initiatives, was elected as President effective June 1st. Congratulations to Jill as she leads LWVSA forward and upward to new heights!

During the meeting, members engaged in robust discussion about increasing civic engagement through local, state, and national calls to action and grassroots efforts. This led to an invitation to members to kick off the Summer of Action by writing Senators Cruz and Cornyn, urging them to vote “no” on the SAVE Act. Over 70 postcards were written on the spot and mailed!  Thank you, LWVSA members, for flexing your collective League muscles and making your voices heard!

The topic of civic engagement led to a discussion about the League of Women Voters' name, past efforts to change the name with LWVUS, and current efforts to emphasize diversity as a reason the League should consider changing its name. It turns out that LWVUS has recently evaluated this issue. In January 2025, LWVUS published a blog on why “women” is an essential part of our name and that women must remain persistent in the fight for equity and respect in a world we contribute to in a multitude of ways. Our new Bexar County Elections Administrator, Michele Carew, topped off the meeting program with an overview of the progress made since assuming the role effective March 1st, as well as plans for the near and long term. This led to members, many of whom serve as election clerks and judges, asking several questions, providing comments, and sharing observations.

LWVSA thanks CPS Energy for once again hosting us at their lovely headquarters, which provided a comfortable and professional setting to conduct official League business.
