In 1940 Mrs. George Hill, who was on the State Board of the League of Women Voters, convinced a group of friends in San Antonio that a local chapter of the League was needed here. They held an organizational meeting in August of 1940 at the St. Anthony Hotel and named Mrs. J. W. Fuller as the interim chair. In September 1940, a letter was sent to the State League requesting that San Antonio be recognized as an affiliate league, which was approved.
Many years ago, the State League applied for status as a tax-exempt organization. The League of Women Voters of San Antonio has been included under the umbrella of the State's tax-exempt status, allowing it to accept tax-exempt contributions. As the San Antonio League successfully sought donations here to help carry out its mission, it was proposed that San Antonio acquire its own tax-exempt status. Earlier this year, the IRS granted the League of Women Voters of the San Antonio Area its own exemption. This enables the local League to streamline and make giving easier for our donors in the community and in local government allows the League here to become closer to those in local government.
The new tax-exempt status went into effect on June 1, 2024, at the start of the San Antonio League's financial year.
