In June 2017 when Madhu Sridhar was voted president of the nonpartisan League of Women Voters of the San Antonio Area, no one else wanted the position. There hadn't been a president for a year.
The members on the all-volunteer board had been running the nonprofit after its previous president stepped down. Sridhar, new to San Antonio and the board, was asked to take on the role of president for one year, an idea she found odd.
